Patient Access/Financial Services Intern     Stanford University Hospital & Clinics                July 2012-September 2013

Engaged in Lean-Active-Daily Management-empathy mapping sessions at Stanford Hospital & Clinics. Charted six-dimensional empathy maps to improve patient experience with clinical laboratories. Developed process workflows and assisted in the development of a “A3” to provide consistent protocol for review and renewal of existing department contracts. Completed a 5S segment of excess office supplies for purpose of creating a centralized location and developed an interactive online universal supply order document to streamline and reduce (defects) re-ordering of supplies and increase process efficiency. Made final presentation and recommendations to Vice President and management team.

Performance Excellence Intern                    Stanford University Hospital & Clinics, Palo Alto CA                    January 2013

Gained experience in the economic, policy and medical aspects of healthcare administration through various meetings, physician shadowing, and research. Became familiar with healthcare administration within a leading tertiary care teaching hospital. Took part in medical center administrative meetings and actively provided input on implementing methods of quality improvement and reducing adverse outcomes among patients. Performed data entry for various departments of the hospital, which helped with recognition of the diverse nature of different departments within the hospital. Utilized management knowledge and skills to assist in managing Stanford University Hospital & Clinics.

Spring Break Volunteer                     Restoring Eden, Auxier KY                                                                                   March 2012

Administered an Appalachian Community Health Survey to residents of Appalachia Kentucky for a week as an alternative spring break. Collected data on the impacts of coal-use on community health for a public health peer-reviewed study. Improved communication abilities and teamwork skills while conversing with a diverse population.

Interim Abroad Student            Health and Culture in Oceania, Pohnpei FSM & Oahu HI                                     January 2012

Explored health and culture in Oceania, examining sources of influence including the colonial experience, regional and global interdependence, the impact of nuclear testing, and the co-existence of traditional and modern values. Attended dinner at the United States Ambassador of Micronesia’s home, and gained independence and leadership skills navigating unfamiliar cities.

Counselor                                        Camp Knutson, Crosslake MN                                                              May 2011-August 2011

Served as the arts and crafts coordinator and camp counselor at Camp Knutson, a camp for children with disabilities including skin disorders, heart diseases, and autism. Devised fun art projects and led outdoor activities to involve all of the children participating in the camp.  Created a safe, caring and enjoyable environment for the campers.

LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

Campus Liason                                          American Public Health Association, Washington DC            September 2013-Present

Disseminate information about the American Public Health Association Student Assembly (APHA-SA) to students, faculty, and administration at St. Olaf College and facilitate a sustained dialogue between St. Olaf College and APHA-SA. Implement campus events related to public health and APHA at St. Olaf College to increase awareness and participation in public health related activities. Participate in quarterly conference calls with other APHA-SA campus liaisons.

Vice President               Blue Key National Honor Society St. Olaf College Chapter, Northfield MN         April 2013-Present

Lead as Vice President of the St. Olaf College chapter of the Blue Key National Honor Society. Plan and manage chapter service events. Promote the society mission of service and leadership to other members of the St. Olaf College community.

Provide significant input toward important library decisions that impact the entire student body and faculty during monthly meetings with other elected members of the group.

Raise awareness for global health issues throughout the St. Olaf College community. Volunteer and research to better understand sustainability in global health measures and gain a more complete understanding of “global health.” Coordinate volunteer opportunities for the organization by contacting and maintaining relations with local volunteer organizations.
